Media Literacy Project

Wordle: Media Lit Proj
Ever day, we read, see and listen to messages from others. We are reached through music, movies, magazines, newspapers, television, video games and advertisements. In this unit, our goal was to become aware of the messages created by others and the values imbedded in those messages. In this blog, we each examined one area of media and looked at how that media might be influencing our values and how it might be contributing to inequity in our society. Each entry describes what we learned from our research and our thoughts about what we learned. Each entry is a thoughtshot: a window into our thinking.

MEN AND WOMEN IN MAGAZINES

INTRODUCTION: For my media project I studied how men and women are portrayed differently in magazine ads. My results came quite close to what I expected but there were surprises in there. I really enjoyed doing my media project and I hope you enjoy reading about it.

I looked at the rap list and chose the rapper I listen to mostly (#1 Eminem) ,(#3 Lil Wayne),(#6 Jay-Z),(#8 50cent), (#11 T.I) and found there best voted song. I scan looking for lyric that talks about sex, Drug And inappropriate languages toward women such as bitch, hoe, els

The Portrayal of Families in TV Shows

What makes up a normal family? What role does each person play and how do they treat each other? I wondered what gave people ideas of what a family was supposed to be like. I noticed that a lot of families are in TV shows and am interested in what messages they give watchers. Does an upper-middle class husband and wife, that have two kids, in a show give a young watcher ideas that's how the typical family is? Do they sub-consciously, or even consciously, have expectations of what they want their family to be like from getting these messages almost every day? I wanted to find out what ideas were being told in TV shows.

I watched a few shows to find out what was being portrayed. I watched an episode of Modern Family, The Simpsons, Desperate Housewives, Glee, and The Office. I looked for who was in the family, their lifestyle, what roles each member in a family played, and how they interacted with each other.

How the ads in Sports Illustrated stereotypes Men and Women

Introduction: For my media project I looked at how Sports Illustrated portrays stereotypes in the ads in their magazines. I counted the number of males in the ads and the number of females in the ads and how they portrayed the males and females in the ads. I chose to study this because I read Sports Illustrated a lot and I was interested to see how the ads in the magazines have influenced me.

How the media influences you about gender through TV (by Evan)

Introduction: Gender stereotypes and discrimination play a bigger role in society then we let ourselves think. The truth is most people would deny that they use gender stereotypes or discriminate against people because of their gender. According to Wikipedia, “Sexism, a term coined in the mid-20th century, is the belief or attitude that one gender or sex is inferior to, less competent, or less valuable than the other. It can also refer to hatred of, or prejudice towards, either sex as a whole (see misogyny and misandry), or the application of stereotypes of masculinity in relation to men, or of femininity in relation to women.” Here’s one example of sexist humor from the T.V. show, “The Office”: in season six episode ten (“Murder”), Angela gets the part of the voodoo queen because she, in the words of Michael, “fits the part.” Really he’s just making fun of her because she’s not pretty. This is why you believe too much of what the media tries to get you, to think what they think that’s why I wrote this, to educate you on the media’s influence through television.

How Homosexuals and Homosexuality Are Portrayed In Popular Shows

Introduction
For my media project I chose to study how homosexuality is portrayed in the popular shows Glee, Modern Family, and Family Guy. I chose these shows because they are all shows that are popular among kids my age. I studied by watching three episodes and identifying the parts where homosexuality was mentioned. Then I wrote out what messages/values could be portrayed from each of these parts. Then I looked over what I had written about each episode and wrote what the show was saying about homosexuality on a whole.

Stereotypes in Modern Warfare 2

What I did:I did my project on stereotypes in a video game called Modern Warfare 2. I looked at the diversity in all of the extra characters and I looked at the background on some of the main characters. This game is a first person shooter. It is violent, as you can see in the picture on the left.

Body Image in Teen Stores

Being a 13 year old girl, I know a lot about how much body image effects people lives, so I decided to study how much the media in popular teen stores contributes to body issues and teens overall confidence in who they are and how they look. I went into stores like Express, Hollister, and Forever 21 and studied what the models in ads looked like, including their race, body type, hair color and texture, and other things that teens worry about appearance-wise. I hope to help teens realize that a lot of their body image issues are caused by the media trying to get you to buy their merchandise. I wanted to do so by showing patterns of how the models look in the popular teen stores and compare them to image concerns that other teenagers have.

Is TV advertising racist? Or, prone to ethnic stereotypes?

Introduction: The media project I chose looked at black and white stereotypes in commercials. I watched popular shows like Chuck, Glee, American idol, Gossip Girl, and Saturday morning cartoons.  I was surprised that racial stereotyping would be present in these commercials. Even though racial stereotyping in advertising has gotten less prominent since the 1950's and 60's we are still not perfect. With TV advertisements showing only one side of different ethnic groups, many people aren't sure what to think.

Top four songs and their messages to the public

I analyzed the top four songs that were downloaded on iTunes the week of May 18, 2010. They were: 1. California Gurls by Katy Perry. 2. Omg by usher (feat. Will.i.am.). 3. Airplanes by B.O.B. (Feat. Haley Williams) 4. Can't Be Tamed by Miley Cyrus.

I was looking for what all the top songs had in common. I was also looking at what the messages of the most downloaded songs were. I analyzed each song to find out what the message of it was and what the artist was trying to say, then I looked at the songs to see if any of the song's messages had anything in common. I looked and read all the lyrics of the songs to get the full message of it. I listened to all the songs to see what the style of the song was and if any of them had similarities. I wanted to find out about the messages and what the songs are really saying to the public. I documented what I found for the content and the style of each song then looked at all of the notes together to see which ones went with each other.

Commercials Over the Decades, how Advertisers have been using the same Tricks

Introduction:

I am studying commercials through the decades. I have looked at four ads in each decade 70's 80's 90's and today. I have looked at McDonald's Coca Cola, General Mills and General Motors, I have been looking at how there adds have been targeted to Kids and teens. Also I have researched different slogans and theme songs that companies use for their buyer to remember and connect the tune to the merchandise, also keeping track of how many times the commercial refers to their product as something you need, or would complete your day.

A lot of people think that the era of marketing has just begun throughout the last ten years or so. What I have found suggests that marketing specifically targeted towards teens or children is not a new strategy for advertisers, but maybe just an idea that has changed in a world of the internet or an a increasing number of television viewers.

When you look back at vintage commercials an see the perfect families and remember the “good old days” back when there were no scams or false advertising but good spirit and honest companies just trying to sell their product. Now looking back at some of adds and from a students perspective seeing other details than just a good spirit. I am not exclaiming that these ads are a scam, but just taking a closer look.

Store Fronts That Attract American Teens

Introduction: For my project, I studied the store fronts on popular teen clothing stores. I wanted to see what kinds of things the companies used to attract teens into their stores. I also recorded what kinds of emotions I felt looking at these stores, and what sort of feelings they want you to feel. Since shopping is a big part of my life, I thought it would be interesting to look more closely at most of the stores I shop at.

Gender Stereotyping in Infant Clothing

Introduction:  How do we know what makes something a "girl" or "boy" thing?  Scientists have been studying what tendencies we are born with and what ones we pick up from our surroundings for along time.  In the fall, I had a baby (Note:  I am a teacher at FSM, not a student!).  I have always been interested in how gender is reinforced by clothing choices, but my baby's arrival made me even more aware of the clothing available for babies   I wondered, though, if I was seeing all of the sides of the issues.  I thought that a careful exploration of baby clothing would help me to see what messages may be hidden in babies' clothing.

Stereotypes in popular tv shows

Over the past month I surveyed and analyzed TV shows searching for stereotypes. I chose shows with different target audiences so I will have mixed audiences, and I will have different sources to average out my results. I wanted to find out what kind of messages this media portrayed. With some of my results I was not surprised, while I was surprised at how much one TV show was promoting a white cast over all other ethnicities. Read on to discover what has been hidden in TV shows you or your family watch.

Body Image in Video Games

Introduction:Video games have many aspects to it. Body image is one of these aspects, which can piece together why men (the main buyer and player of video games) love to play video games. Body image in video games can be different depending on the genre, process power, and the developers. Body image can tell us about how entertainment interprets men and women in video games.

The Marketing of Barbie

My media project was looking at the marketing of Barbie dolls at Target. For this project, I went to the Target store located on University Avenue in St. Paul, MN. I looked at the Barbie aisle to get a "bigger picture" of how Target sells Barbie dolls and then I looked closely at several individual Barbie dolls, noticing how the company that makes Barbie, Mattel, markets individual dolls. I looked closely at several of the over one-hundred Barbie dolls in the aisle; their ethnicity, body type, clothing, careers and accessories.
